"he" and "him." Although it is true that most DJs
are male, some very good female DJs are out there, too!

Finding DJ is easy. Finding a good DJ is tough. In
talking to many brides-to-be, I often hear that it is hard for them to
find a DJ that is highly recommended. Brides are often disappointed because
DJs are hard to get in touch with, unreliable or they play inappropriate
or a limited selection of music. Here are some tips that may help you
find the a good DJ for your Sacramento area wedding.
Eight Tips for Finding a DJ in the Sacramento Area
1. Requirements. Before contacting any service,
think about your requirements for a DJ. Talk with your friends, your spouse-to-be,
and your family. Try to answer these questions.
- What are you looking for in a DJ?
- Is price or quality more important?
- What kind of budget do you have in mind?
- Do you want the DJ to have liability insurance? (Some reception sites
require this, others do not.)
- What kind of personality do you want?
- How many hours do you want him or her to play?
- Should the DJ be able to move his equipment quickly if necessary?
- To what extent do you want to be able to pick out the music for your
wedding and reception?
- How much pre-event planning time do you want your DJ to provide?
- Do you want the DJ to entertain the crowd or just help the reception
flow smoothly with tasteful announcements?
- Do you expect the DJ to help people get up and dance?
- What kind of music equipment do you expect the DJ to have?
- How many guests will you have? That may impact the equipment requirements.
- Do you want a video projected with the audio from the projector being
fed into the DJs system?
- Do you want your DJ to show and narrate a photo montage.
- Do you want "intelligent lights" that respond to the music?
- Do you want the DJ to give out "party props" to help put
guests in a party mood?
- Do you want your DJ to be able to take requests at the reception?
- Do you want something special, like live music or a dance lesson at
the reception along with DJ service. Some DJs provide package deals
that include a lot of extras.
If you thnk through your requirements, you'll be better able to interview
your DJ.
2. Attend bridal shows. There are usually several Sacramento
area bridal shows. At these shows you can interview several DJs, get
price quotes and a feel for the DJ's personality. Don't forget your
list of requirements when you go. These organizations have very good
bridal shows in the Sacramento area each year:
Association for Wedding Professionals,
International -- This show (held in September and February) goes
on for 2 days and it is free. It is held at the Sunrise Mall in Citrus
Heights. So you can do some shopping, have lunch and check out many
different wedding vendors.
Cal Expo-Sacramento, CA -- Call (916) 537-2327 for information. Also
watch for TV advertisements about this show. Tell 'em "Doctor Phil"
sent you.
Perfect Wedding Guide bridal show-- Call Denny Walker for more information.
Tell him Doctor Phil sent you. 916-961-3434
3. Register. Register with an online website
and specify that you are looking for a DJ who is available in your area
on your wedding date.. One very good site is http://www.EntertainUSA.com
. After registering at this site, you can expect calls almost immediately
from DJs who are available on the day of your reception.
4. Special email account. Set up a special
email account for getting information from various wedding vendors. Base
the name of your new free account on your first name and that of your
fiance. for example:
TimAndJessica@gmail.com.
There several very good free email services available these days. Gmail
accounts (Google email accounts) are especially good. You can always find
things quickly by Googling your own email! Since Google is on the leading
edge, it is nice to have a gmail account so you find out the latest developments.
If you are a bride or groom to be, or a relative of a future bride or
groom, you may request an invitation for a Gmail
account by clicking here.
5. How to Interview. When interviewing a DJ use a lot of
open-ended questions. Don't use close-ended questions, like "Are
you good at getting people up to dance?" as that won't tell you much.
Instead ask, "Tell me about how you get people up to dance."
6. Your Budget. If budget is a concern, ask
the DJ if he or she has any special package deals. For example, you may
be able to get a limo and a DJ in a package deal and save some money.
Some DJs (like yours truly) also offer related services like massage,
private dance lesons, or even live music to supplement DJ services. You
may want a harpist, pianist, classical guitarist play at the wedding ceremony
or during dinner, but a DJ for dancing. Or you may want a DJ to play while
the band takes a break.
7. Booking a Sacramento DJ. When possible, start
looking for a DJ at least a year in advance. Avoid booking a DJ immediately
especially if you feel any sales pressure. Avoid booking with agencies
or large DJ companies, unless you meet the DJ face-to-face. Take your
time and find the DJ that fits your requirements. When possible, narrow
down your selection for a DJ and then meet the DJ in person before booking
him. Listen to his sound system and find out what kinds of songs he has
or can get for you.
8. Video Bridal Guide. Get a free copy of the Video
Bridal Guide (a DVD), which was specially designed for Sacramento
brides and grooms. This DVD has a lot of ideas to help you plan your wedding.
It also has video demos of the top Sacramento wedding vendors so you can
see them in action. For more information on the free Video Bridal Guide,
